If you have another working desktop PC...
...chances are that if you open it up there will be an extra SATA cable floating around inside of it. If the "dead" hard drive is mechanically sound but you're dealing with, for example, a corrupt Windows installation that won't boot, then you can just plug it in to the other PC and grab files off of it.
